About me

Welcome to my world of imagination…

Born in Armenia and based in Germany, I paint human mind, decisions we make and chaotic world of our memories… well, let me explain it in more detail.

Why Do I Paint?

I have always loved experimenting with different materials, techniques and concepts. And for a very long time, I thought there was nothing in common between the series of artworks I have painted. And on top of that, I have a Master’s degree in behavioural economics and game theory. I felt like there cannot be a full picture not because I was missing too many puzzle pieces but rather because I thought to be solving different puzzles altogether.

Understanding Myself Through My Art

When I was working on my series of Japanese panels „The Impermanence of Memory“, it suddenly came all together. The red thread in my work is my forever fascination of human mind, what it’s capable of, what it changes or erases over time, what it creates out of abstract ideas, making something entirely new that was not there before. Or the opposite, deleting details it deems unnecessary. And my initial inspiration by surrealism suddenly made sense to me.

Inspiration and Influence

My first love was Dali‘s „Persistence of Memory“. Then I discovered Hieronymus Bosch and René Magritte. Much later Valentin Podpomogov, Mark Ryden, H. R. Giger. Albrecht Dürer’s gravures, Alena Olasyuk’s and Roberta Boffo’s meditative inking became another source of inspiration for me. Very different in their aesthetic and topics. What they all had in common for me was that they painted images that can only be created in one’s mind in the first place. Nothing that you can ever see in real life unless someone paints it. At the same time, they were deeply symbolic and sparked discussions on many aspects.

Over time, I discovered philosophical and symbolic art beyond paintings: Chiharu Shiota‘s spatial installations of memory and human connection (The Key in the Hand and Piano In Silence), and Doris Salcedo‘s topology of mourning in traces of humanity (1550 chairs).

After years of research, study and practice, I came to understanding my own mental space as an artist. So here is my official artist statement:

Arpi’s Artist Statement

My practice operates as an archaeological excavation of the human psyche, of fleeting moments and of everyday small decisions. My invisible “red thread” connects the seemingly unimportant objects of life to complex entanglements of thought. Initially grounded in the meticulous, existential linework of Albrecht Dürer’s northern renaissance gravures and the subversive, dream-logic realities of surrealist icons like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, my work has since evolved beyond mere psychological landscapes. It has transformed into a contemporary inquiry into the structures of consciousness and memory, deeply informed by the spatial, web-like symbolism of Chiharu Shiota, by the topology of mourning of Doris Salcedo and the dense, meditative ink cartography of Roberta Boffo. This artistic lineage is fundamentally anchored by my background in Game Theory and Behavioral Sciences, which introduces a rigorous, mathematical approach to decoding how humans navigate complex scenarios. By interrogating the hidden architecture of choice, the friction between conscious strategy and the profound, unconscious impulses that drive us, I treat each composition as a visual matrix of human mind. I view the surface of the paper as a liminal threshold where abstract thoughts codify into graphic forms, challenging the viewer to question where the boundaries of the self truly end and where the influence of external world begins. My art is the exploration of human mind and its symbolic output in form of decisions, everyday objects, in simplicity of moments and impermanence of our memories.
